Life is Short, Eat a Sweet Treat

A few months back, Tom's parents sent a care package full of British sweet treats and chocolates. Over the many weeks, I meticulously tried each treat and rated them out of 10. From chocolate bars to biscuits to wafers to taffy, I tried just about every type of treat available in England, although there are still lots for me to try in the future!

Anywho...let's get into the offical rankings.

There were only a handful of treats that made above a 9 on my scale: Cadbury Salted Caramel Fingers, Cadbury Caramel bar, and Greens Dark Chocolate bar. I have pretty high standards when it comes to my treats, and these blew me away. Both the caramel ones were the perfect mix of chocolate and caramel. Tom's mom even included the fancy dark chocolate bar in the mix for me since she knew it is my favorite type of chocolate. I absolutely adore dark chocolate, and it was a perfect blend of richness, bitterness, and and creaminess; 9.8/10.

A vast majority of the chocolates earned between a 7.5 and a 9, which was to be expected seeing as how I thoroughly enjoy chocolate. There were several candies that were similar to popular American brands. The highlight of this section were the various Cadbury mini bars. There were bars that were filled with rolled chocolate, bits of honeycomb, aerated chocolate, and wafers. I loved the variety provided, especially since the overall chocolate was delicious.

There were a few standouts from the mix. Jammie Dodgers (a shortbread biscuit with raspberry jam in the middle) were scrumptius. They had just the right amount of jam so as not to overwhelm the palate. Terry's Chocolate Orange Slices were another VERY surprising treat. I am sure most of you are aware of chocolate oranges, and you may even be like me where you think those 2 flavors should never be mixed; period. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by the flavor. Somehow, someway the chocolate and orange actually worked together. Another standout were the Jelly Babies. They were somewhat gummy while also being firm (I don't know an American candy to compare it to, unfortunately). I was most excited to try the black currant flavor since that is not a flavor that can be found back home. It tasted a little like grape mixed with blueberry; I did not love it, but I also did not hate it.

Very few treats earned between a 5 and a 6 on the ranking scale. Unfortunately, these were mainly old-fashioned candies, such as Parma Violets that tasted like I ate an entire bouquet of violets. Straight sugar candies (think along the lines of Fun-Dip or Pixy Stix) scored quite low. If I am going to stuff my face full of sugar, I do want it to be more than just powder in a bag. I still enjoyed trying them though.

Just like before, special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard for sending over the care package! I thoroughly enjoyed each treat, especially in comparison to American treats. I think I might even have to admit the UK does chocolate better than the U.S. ... try not to hate me!
